what if we get a dream sequence where ed is longing for what could have happened, what should have happened. like, we see the same few beats of him on the dock, calling out for stede and looking increasingly concerned. but then the brush behind him rustles, and stede actually stumbles out into view.

and ed’s face breaks out into the most relieved, beautiful smile, and there’s this very dreamy sequence of them breathing each other’s names and running to each other. they of course hug each other tightly, maybe even kiss, before ed murmurs something like, “was worried for a second. thought i’d lost you.”

only for stede to go “oh, no. you’ll never ever lose me.”

...and then ed wakes up in the gutted darkness of the captain’s quarters. alone.

To the boys’ Warrior Cats names, Vasco has a bunch of good options! I like Honey- or Sun- for him given his usual theming. Not a lot of Warriors names are subtle, which is fun. And then for the back half, I think the best matches would be things like -heart or -fur. It gives Vasco a sort of everyman’s name that feels well-suited to him and matches the front half. (I believe they’ve also used Hound- before, which is another fun and on-the-nose option.)

Conversely, Machete should probably also have a name that’s a bit out there, which also makes him harder to pin down. You could lean into the meaning of the Machete nickname and give him something the cats perceive as dangerous like Adder- or Badger-, and then maybe something like -strike to give it that weapon feeling. But also, he could just be named after a weapon! More recent Warriors has cats that were named by humans become Warriors and keep their names, so we have fun cat names like Billystorm and Monkeystar. It’s not out of the realm of possibility for Machete to be named after a kittypet or former Kittypet and end up with a name like Swordslash or something weird like that.

The other option would be to lean into his pathetic wet cat nature and give him a name that just sounds like it belongs to a pathetic wet cat. Mouse-, Twig-. They’ve even used Fidget-, more than once I think, which gets to Machete’s nervous nature. -step or -foot might work for those and get the point across.

They’ve also used Milk- before, if you want to really match up with Vasco! Milkpelt is a funny, sopping wet cat name I think makes sense.
